Early Life

Moses Chimereze Okpo was born on 6th March 1961 into the family of Late Catechist Gilbert Evwrulobi and Abigail Okpo of Umudumiri Amuzu in Umuopara-Amuzu of old Mgboko Umudumiri autonomous Community (now Mgboko Omeni) in Obi-Ngwa LGA of Abia State. Mossy (fondly called by his parents and friends) was the third out of four children of his family. Moses being a promised child, died at age 3 and regained life in order to fulfil Gods’ promise.

Education

He was a very bright pupil who doubled classes under an academic year, which made him ahead of his mates. Mossy in 1965 attended Olokoro Central School, Umuahia for his primary education and obtained his First School Leaving Certificate (FSLC) in 1970 at Holy Trinity Primary School, Ndiohimbe, Isiala Ngwa, Abia State and was the only candidate who passed that year. He gained admission in 1972 into Wilcox Memorial Comprehensive Secondary School, Aba, and passed his West African School Certificate (WASC) with good grades.

A Paradigmatic Professional Accountant

After his NYSC, Moses progressed in his career and served the Federal Government of Nigeria in his profession as a Civil Servant. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1990 and was inducted as a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) in October 1992 and was elevated to status of a Fellow in January 2003. Also, in April 1999 he became an Associate member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN).

As an experienced financial professional, Mr. Moses Chimereze Okpo served in various capacities in the Civil Service as he progressed in his career due to his intelligence and integrity.

Moses started work as a clerk at Federal Audit Department, Jos, Plateau State in 1978. In July 1991 he moved the ladder to the rank of Principal Accountant and in 1994 as an Assistant Chief Accountant (Internal Audit) at the National Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission. Moses moved on with his career and by Nov. 1997 he became the Chief Accountant at the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources.

Moses was truly a Professional Accountant, and the very best at what he did. This dramatic rise came with a sheer hard work and dedication. He served as the 4th Vice-Chairman of the ICAN Abuja & District Society from 1999-2003.

He rose to the rank of Assistant Director by March 2000 in the office of the Accountant General of the Federation and got posted in 2003 to the Budget Office because of his excellent skills and ideas. While still at the Budget Office, he was promoted to the rank of Deputy Director in June 2007 and by April 2009, he was deployed to the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation.

Moses was always ready to serve his country wherever his services were needed. By March 2011 Moses was posted to Federal Ministry of Transport as Director (Finance & Accounts). He continued his journey as a Director in Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation in May 2012 and the Federal Ministry of Finance in July 2013.

By July 2016, he was deployed to the Federal Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs as the Director (Finance and Accounts) until his death. From March to December 2017 he was privileged to oversee the affairs of Office of the Permanent Secretary in Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs.

Marital Life

On the 19th February 1994, he married his lovely, amiable and charming wife, former Miss Ifeoma Perpetua Okoli , an indigene of Imezi-Owa LGA, Enugu State who is also a Chartered Accountant. The marriage is blessed with three sons and a daughter. Iheanyichukwu Chimereze Okpo a graduate of Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Onyebuchi Ezekwesiri Okpo a graduate of Accounting & Finance, Chinonyerem Chidiebere Okpo and Chiamaka Onyinyechi Okpo who are final year students of Law and Accounting, respectively.

Moses loved all his children and always referred to his daughter as Mama Mu meaning MY MOTHER.

Social Life

Moses did not delve much into social activities but had passion and therefore devoted the better part of his life for the kingdom as he cherished the things of God. He was a philanthropist who loved impacting in the life of others. He was a true Nigerian, with the ability to fluently speak all three major languages in Nigeria. No wonder, Moses advocated for his subordinates no matter where they came from. Discrimination was not in his dictionary. He never segregated against any notwithstanding where one came from, North, South, East, and West. He loved everyone equally.

Conclusion

Mr. Moses Chimereze Okpo was an ardent and devoted Christian till his last day. He was very kind, humble and a simple man who worshipped God with all he had in life. He was honest, sincere, hardworking, and indeed a friend to all. He hated injustice and would do everything to stand by the truth though it was costly. He forgave all who wronged him.

He had so much unquantifiable joy in his heart as he helped others. We all say Daddy good night, Dee Mossy Adieu, Enyioha, Sleep well, Omereoha. You have done your bit. May you sleep on the Bosom of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
